If you’ve never had the opportunity to immerse yourself in the worlds created by Phoebe Wahl then our advice to you is simple, enrol your child in this week long exploration of this charming authorstrator’s work and live vicariously through them.
An author, illustrator and sculptor, Phoebe employs a vast array of media in her work; from watercolour to collage and the lesser known arena of fabric sculpture. Christianne will guide the group through several of Wahl’s books, before encouraging students to use them as inspiration for their own miniature felted (and painted) characters. We’ll be sure to devote enough time not only to learning the craft of felting and acrylic painting, but also to really understand the themes of comfort and nostalgia in our relationship with nature (all central pillars of Wahl’s work).
At a glance, her stories are utterly enchanting, but dig a little deeper and there’s a depth of meaning that’s even more magical than the artwork. The first of its kind in the Lyceum summer camp calendar, we know that this camp will become a firm favourite almost immediately.
TBC: We will be pressing pause mid-week to interview the creator herself via Zoom -- be sure to send your child with their most pressing of questions.
