Invasive Species Good, Bad or Inevitable?

Beginning with the book Where Do Camels Belong: The Story and Science of Invasive Species, we will explore the concepts of Endemic, Invasive and Indigenous species and their relationships to specific ecosystems. Rosy Dock by Jeannie Baker makes the dangers of invasive species immediately apparent and connections will be made to local efforts to curb Purple Loosestrife, Scotch Broom and Himalayan blackberry.
We will then explore endemic species in British Columbia and research why they do well in our particular environment. We will make memory pins of these species as placeholders for our learning.
Finally, we will represent our learning with each student choosing an environment, (valley, forest, tidal pool or mountain ridge) and invite them to invent their own animal or plant with characteristics that would enable it to thrive in this environment.
Campers will get the chance to use Sculpey, collected nature treasures and multimedia materials to create an ecosystem for the animal or plant they have chosen. They will ultimately nestle their special species in a safe and secure shadow box, perfect for display above the fireplace or in a cosy corner of your home.
