The One and Only Ivan

MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2022
9:00 AM TO 4:30
AGES 5 TO 13

The eternally charming Ivan, a silverback gorilla, will captivate even the most reluctant of readers. His passion for the hurried sweep of a brush stroke or how one might capture the taste of a mango in a painting bubbles over, off the pages and into the hearts of anyone who is enraptured with the story. Campers are invited to join us in creating a freestyle acrylic masterpiece on individual canvases, signing them with a fingerprint just like Ivan. After taking a break midday to explore key sections of the film, Christianne will spend time modelling the animal’s basic shapes for the students, making this camp’s offerings truly priceless.  Our young artists will practice portraits of Ruby, Bob and Ivan, ultimately immortalising them in shrink art and stringing them onto a memory necklace. Applegate’s beautifully crafted tale, inspired by a true story, is sure to mesmerise long after this camp concludes.

 The Book

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living in a glass cage at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home —and his own art— through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.
