Let’s get the basics out of the way first.
WHAT IS A ZINE?
A zine is a small circulation self-published work of original text and image. Profit is not the primary intent of publication, so zines are often about topics that their authors are passionate about, and feel are not adequately represented in mainstream media. Most zines are reproduced via photocopier.
WHAT IS THE ZINE PROJECT AT THE LYCEUM?
Each writer in our writers’ workshops will choose a topic, theme or organizing principle for their collection during our first class. Each time they come to the Lyceum, writers will be given a way they might approach their topic as a provocation. Students are also always encouraged to write from an idea of their own. Writing will be taken through the editorial process as we go along. At the end of the term, each student’s writing will be collected, bound and printed in an edition of five copies, which will be sold for five dollars each at the Lyceum’s annual zine fair.
Now the important stuff…
